mDL (mobile driving licence)

A driving licence or state ID held on a phone as an ISO/IEC 18013-5 mdoc, presented in person over NFC or Bluetooth or online, with each data element revealed separately and signed by the issuing authority.

An mDL uses the document type org.iso.18013.5.1.mDL and namespace org.iso.18013.5.1 with elements such as family_name, birth_date, portrait, driving_privileges and age-over flags (age_over_21) that let a verifier check age without seeing the birth date. A reader engages the device by QR code or NFC, establishes an encrypted session and requests only the elements it needs; the holder consents on the phone.

Deployments include several US states (accepted at TSA checkpoints), Apple Wallet and Google Wallet IDs, and the EU's mobile driving licence plans under the revised driving licence directive. Verifiers trust issuing authorities through IACA root certificates distributed, for example, by the AAMVA Digital Trust Service.
